The Atonement Academy Completes the Catholic Education Foundation’s Catholic School Identity Assessment with Distinction

Rochester, NY, May 11, 2011: The Catholic Education Foundation is pleased to announce that the Atonement Academy in San Antonio, Texas, is the first school successfully to complete the Foundation’s Catholic School Identity Assessment (CSIA), exceeding the Foundation’s high standards for promoting excellence in Catholic identity.

Reverend Peter M. J. Stravinskas, Executive Director of the Catholic Education Foundation, congratulated the school: “Through its successful completion of the Catholic School Identity Assessment, The Atonement Academy has demonstrated its commitment to a full expression of its Catholic identity and authentic living out of its mission to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ as understood and taught by the Catholic Church.”

Reverend Christopher Phillips, pastor of Our Lady of the Atonement parish in San Antonio, said, “I am delighted with the Catholic Education Foundation’s assessment of ‘the Catholicity Quotient’ of our school, especially because we view The Atonement Academy as an integral element of our parochial life.” Our Lady of the Atonement was the first canonically-erected Anglican Use parish in the United States. The Catholic School Identity Assessment (CSIA) is an innovative program sponsored by the Catholic Education Foundation to help a Catholic school assess its Catholic identity. A school can choose from three levels of evaluation, depending on the depth of analysis it desires. The goal is to provide the Catholic school a means for self-reflection by its administration, faculty and staff on how each works to support the Catholic identity of the school, and to provide the school with feedback from an independent third party using a standard, objective set of criteria. Because these standards are uniform and objective, the school can measure its progress longitudinally, to chart over the course of years, how well it is adhering to its primary mission. As part of each assessment, Catholic Education Foundation staff offer the school a set of conceptual and concrete recommendations that can be reassessed on a regular basis.  In essence, the CSIA is designed to help Catholic schools create an environment in which Catholic culture thrives and permeates every aspect of the school’s life. The CSIA assists Catholic schools in forming a concrete plan of action for creating this environment, to give glory to God and to help its students love God above all things and their neighbors as themselves.

ACADEMY EXPANSION PLANS
The Atonement Academy is a remarkable school.  It has achieved National Blue Ribbon status, and our Upper School was selected as one of the fifty best high schools in the nation.  We offer fourteen years of Catholic education, from Pre-Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade.  Our graduates have entered some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country.  The education we offer is Catholic and Classical, with the daily Mass serving as the foundation of each school day.  We have already expanded the school once, and the time has come for another expansion.  We have a pressing need for more classrooms, science labs, music facilities and athletic facilities.  A new theater will provide opportunities to expand into new areas in the performing arts.  Our present gymnasium cannot accommodate all the athletic events we sponsor.  As our student body continues to grow, we need more space for teachers and administrators.  Our present facility, large as it is, is bursting at the seams.  Below you can see the plans for the proposed expansion.  Have a close look, and consider making a sacrificial contribution towards its completion.  There is no better investment than Catholic education.  We take seriously the task of forming young Catholics in their faith, and we link that to an outstanding academic program.  Our students are well-prepared for taking their place in the Church and society as outstanding and faithful leaders.

Behold, the Wood of the Cross, on which hung the Saviour of the world.

O come, let us adore Him.

We had an extraordinary visit from Dr. Gerre Hancock and Dr. Judith Hancock, both acknowledged leaders in the field of sacred music, after some thirty years spent at St. Thomas, 5th Avenue, and now at UT Austin.  They worked with our students for several days, to prepare for the celebration of Solemn Evensong and Benediction. While they were here, a Spring Concert was presented by the students in third, fourth and fifth grades.  A highlight of the evening was when Dr. Gerre Hancock directed the students in singing "The Choristers' Prayer."  It was especially gratifying to hear their professional opinion about the choral music program we have at the academy, which they described as being "one of the finest in the country."  This was high praise indeed, coming from experts who have a finger on the pulse of sacred music throughout the nation.
The organ recital given by the Hancocks was just remarkable, and the service which followed was tremendously moving.  With Gerre directing the students, and Judith at the organ, it was a loving act of worship, and it certainly gave glory to God. We're particularly blessed to have Edmund and Chalon Murray as our musicians here in the parish.  Their work, especially with the students, is nothing short of astonishing.

For those in the Armed Forces of our Country:
Almighty God, we commend to thy gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with thy heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of thine abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Collect for Peace:
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know thee is eternal life and to serve thee is perfect freedom: Defend us, thy humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
